It’s an Apple II series device with an extra built-in modem that allows the phone’s operator to set up a “0x0 0x0” modem with a password. Apple 0x0 0x0 can be a handy way of getting into a phone system, but what it really is is a hack and a way to bypass the modem’s security. 

This is because the modem is always sending commands on the “0x0” code, and it is very possible to get a command into your phone’s memory address space that will be received by the modem, which then instructs the modem to send it a message and then execute it. The hack works like this: the 0x0 0x0 modem allows the phone’s operator to set up a “0x0 0x0” modem with a password.

In this case, the 0x0 0x0 modem can send a message to itself and then execute it.
